| Hakodate is accessible by airplane, boat, and train and is known for its slopes, churches, and foreign atmosphere. Together with Yokohama and Nagasaki, Hakodate was open to international trade during the end of the Edo period. Foreign ships visited this good port and introduced articles and culture from overseas. In the Motomachi area at the foot of Mt. Hakodate are the British Consulate, Russian Consulate, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, Russian Orthodox Church, and Episcopal Church. Many Western style buildings still remain and add a nostalgic touch to the area. Take the ropeway near Motomachi to get to Mt. Hakodate. From the top you can enjoy a spectacular view of the harbor and town during the day or at night. If you head towards the water, you will eventually reach Cape Tachimachi and Takuboku Ishikawa´s grave. This famous poet had a strong attachment to Hakodate and said that he wanted to die there. Walk along the bay area that once prospered from unloading cargo and fishing. Enjoy the atmosphere of the old days at the Kanemori Warehouses and the Ex-Nihon Yusen Co., Otaru Branch, that now contain restaurants and stores. Hakodate Morning Market is held in front of Hakodate Station. In the northern part of the city there are Goryokaku Fort, a Western style fort where the last battle of the Hakodate War took place, and Yunokawa Spa, which faces the Tsugaru Current. Hakodate is such a charming place to travel to.
