| GPWS, or Ground Proximity Warning System, is a system
that prevents aircraft from crashing into terrain. It uses radio altimeter information
to detect if the airplane is coming too close to the ground and then provides
the pilot with a verbal warning. Enhanced-GPWS, which has recently become available,
stores a database of geographical features, can detect terrain in the forward
direction, and issues a verbal and visual warning if the airplane is coming too
close to terrain. All ANA aircraft have conventional GPWS, and we are working
towards being the first Japanese airline to equip its entire fleet with Enhanced-GPWS. |
